MILITARY BUNKER

Blog

Belgrade Fortress has opened another interesting historic sight, a military bunker (opposite to the Victor Monument) that takes us into the mid 50s and the period of the Cold War.

Bunker was built at the beginning of the 50s of the 20th century and it is one of several hundred cannon, machine gun and other bunkers built in this area. Due to the lack of documentation nobody can say for sure when and why the bunker was built, however a date 10th or 18th of October 1953 has been carved at the wall of the stairs leading to the bunker, which leads us to the fact that it was built in the first half of the 5th decade of the last century. The bunker was never used for its original purpose.

During the bunker tour, visitors will hear interesting stories and see an exhibition entitled “Somewhere in between” that presents activities of Yugoslav National Army after the WWII and in the period of the Cold War (from the end of 40s until the end of 80s). In addition to this display, specially created exhibition tells the story about Belgrade Fortress as a military object in the period between 1945 and 1955, when this bunker was built. The installation consists of photographs presented in an interactive display, enabling visitors to flick them like a book.

The military bunker is open all year round, every day from 11:00 to 19:00 and entry costs 100 dinars.
